iShoe could protect the elderly from bone fractures

This week, researchers at MIT, Harvard and NASA unveiled the iShoe, a pressure-sensitive insole that detects the unusual weight distribution that heralds balance problems.

The iShoe was originally designed to help astronauts returning from space to reacquaint themselves with Earth's gravity, but the designers quickly identified a larger - and potentially more lucrative - market. The iShoe could detect balance problems in the elderly and identify those most at risk of falls that can easily fracture brittle old bones.

A future version of the iShoe could even stimulate the feet, providing feedback and helping patients regain their balance.

As it turns out, we've been here before. Back in 2002, Jim Collins and colleagues at Boston University built a vibrating platform to boost the sense of balance that pressure on the soles of the feet provides.

Yohan Payan at the TIMC lab near Grenoble, France, has tackled the problem from the other end of the body. He designed a device that fits snugly in the mouth and 'tickles' the tongue if the body sways too much in one direction, which also provides feedback to help correct balance problems.

Also, since it is GPS-enabled, our Crusoe would have no problem finding his way around any island. Windows Mobile 6 makes sure he has access to all his mails, can receive his MMS and SMS, play videos and music, and even write his journal in MS Word. Of course, he’ll also have access to Excel and Powerpoint. The P750’s nifty and functional stylus makes for a great style statement. Add to that two cameras – including one for video conferencing – and you have a complete package to get stranded with. On the downside, however, the phone is not conducive to single-handed SMSing. And its low centre of gravity – due to its huge touch-screen – can make for cumbersome handling. All in all, if you’re someone who is always on the move, needs to lug around his complete office on a belt clip, and can afford the huge data charges, the P750 is not a bad Man Friday to bet on. But yes, it doesn’t come cheap!

LONDON: A US-based scientist of Indian origin has developed a new mechanism based on the flapping wings of birds to power micro air vehicles, helping them bear the brunt of gusts of wind.
“Making things mimic nature is much more difficult than it might seem,” said Sunil Agrawal, director of the Mechanical Systems Laboratory at the University of Delaware. “It is scientifically fascinating, but also extremely challenging.”
The problem that most micro air vehicles face is that they are easily pushed off course by light gusts of wind.
Nature’s answer to this problem is to give small birds wings that can be flapped in bursts to avoid sudden gusts.
But human engineers have found it hard to build a flapping mechanism that is both light and efficient enough to get ornithopters off the ground while also carrying a suite of instruments such as a camera and a radio transmitter.
One problem is that flapping is not a simple up and down movement, but a complex series of motions that include rotating the wing to “feather” it in the upward part of a stroke.
Now, Agrawal and colleagues have solved this problem by building a flapping mechanism for micro air vehicles that is powered by a single actuator.
The mechanism can be used in a micro air vehicle with a wing span of less than 15 centimetres.
“We want to show that the flappingwing machines can be built,” Agrawal said. “Eventually, we would like to expand from a single flying machine to a group of cooperative flying machines.”
As well as powering an ornithopter, the mechanism could be used to create a flapping air current, or to propel an underwater vehicle.
